WAO is an international umbrella organization comprising 111 regional and national allergology and clinical immunology societies, forming a global network. Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it aims to advance clinical care through education, research, and training as a worldwide alliance of allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology societies. Founded in 1951, WAO has organized 25 major congresses and sponsors scientific symposia in developing regions, and also supports postgraduate programs during professional congresses. The organization is a member of CIOMS and maintains a working relationship with the World Health Organization.

In June 2023, WAO partnered with the National Asthma Council Australia to address environmental mould and related factors that contribute to asthma and allergies among households. WAO’s activities center on serving its global network of member societies and acting as a resource and advocate in the field of allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology through education, research, and training.
