World Coffee Research is a mid-sized, nonprofit research and development program within the global coffee industry, focused on sustaining high-quality coffee supplies while improving the livelihoods of families who grow the crop. It is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, with satellite offices in Marseille and Santa Ana, where it also operates a research farm. The organization builds a toolbox of coffee varieties, genetic resources, and related technologies and disseminates them strategically in producing countries to ease constraints in the supply chain for high-quality coffee. Across more than 30 countries, WCR conducts trials and projects aimed at delivering higher quality coffee, more productive farms, and more sustainable livelihoods for farmers. It collaborates with leading research institutes, government bodies, and coffee organizations worldwide, as well as with local researchers, NGOs, and the private sector, to maximize on-the-ground impact. In February 2026, it launched CafeClima, a free web platform intended to help farmers, agronomists, funders, and investors make climate-smart coffee replanting decisions.
