The World Council of Optometry is a nonprofit organization that coordinates the global optometry community. It represents more than 200,000 optometrists across nearly 60 countries through a network of affiliate, associate, corporate, and individual memberships spanning six world regions: Africa, Asia Pacific, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, Latin America, and North America. It is the only optometric body in official relations with the World Health Organization. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, the organization celebrated its 90-year anniversary in 2017. Its mission is to promote eye health and vision care as a human right and to advance the availability of high-quality eye health services worldwide through advocacy, education, policy development, and humanitarian outreach.
