WPI is a not-for-profit center focused on supporting people with neuro-immune diseases, including myalgic encephalomyelitis and fibromyalgia. It is based in Reno, Nevada, operating within the Center for Molecular Medicine on the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine campus. The organization was founded in 2005 by the Whittemore family in honor of a family member and her physician, Dr. Daniel Peterson, with the facility funded through private, state, and federal grants. WPI supports treatment discovery through clinical research and works with basic researchers to advance scientific knowledge. It also promotes disease understanding via educational activities and advocates for federal and state support of Clinical Treatment Centers of Excellence for NIDs, aiming to broaden access to care. The center’s mission emphasizes accelerating treatments and translating scientific findings into medical options for patients and communities, both locally and internationally.
