Xfire was a Santa Monica–based platform in the computer games sector that served core gamers with social gaming services. Founded in 2003, the company became part of Viacom before being spun out in 2010 by a private team of entrepreneurs and investors. As a small to mid-sized operation, it refreshed its website and updated the desktop and in-game client interface to reflect a reinvigorated product. Historically, Xfire expanded into competitive play with Battleground, a service offering several modes and a built-in virtual economy powered by paid and earned currencies. The platform also delivered social networking, group voice chat, in-game media sharing, and live streaming of gameplay. Xfire closed in 2016.
