Youth Rights Media is a New Haven, Connecticut-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to become leaders in their communities. YRM builds youth power by providing opportunities for civic engagement and teaching media production, equipping young people with tools, skills, and strategies for creating social change. YRM teaches young people how to make and use media to affect change and supports young people as documentary filmmakers, artists, and community change agents. We ask our youth to think critically about the issues they face and the way these issues are presented by the mainstream media. By providing our youth with the opportunity to explore and define the world around them, we are creating a safe space for them to analyze their realities, take a stand on issues directly affecting them, share their stories and have their true voices heard through their own media creations. Youth Rights Media encourages young people to transform negative media representations of youth by creating their own media. We help give those who are silenced by society because of their age, race, and socioeconomic status the ability to speak out and use their voices – and their own stories – as agents of social change. We strive to present our interns with a vision of social justice. Through our programming, we urge youth to become aware of the cyclical and often-institutionalized causes behind the local community issues they so readily identify. The civic investment and participation we encourage in our interns is a result of the passion ignited in them through this kind of exploration; through our programming, Youth Rights Media seeks to open the door to a lifetime of conviction and social change.
