A Foundation Building Strength is a nonprofit research organization based in Palo Alto, California, founded in 2008 to pursue treatments for Nemaline Myopathy. It funds and coordinates collaborative medical research aimed at understanding NM and developing therapies for muscle weakness caused by muscle cell abnormalities. The founders, Marc and Dana Guillet, started AFBS after their daughter Ava was diagnosed with NM, and Ava requires ongoing therapies and specialized feeding. Recently, AFBS expanded its research network with a February 2026 partnership with DNA Nanobots, LLC, marking its first collaboration with a private biotechnology company. In September 2025, AFBS helped host the SciFam Conference with Team Titin and Cure CMD, connecting communities affected by NM and related conditions.
