A Glimmer of Hope, a nonprofit organization based in Austin, Texas, was founded in 2000 by Donna and Philip Berber with the goal of ending poverty and uplifting rural communities in Ethiopia. From 2000 through 2024, it completed more than 10,000 projects and touched the lives of over 5 million people in rural Ethiopia. In 2024, the founders shifted Glimmer away from an international NGO model toward direct grantmaking, prioritizing grants for locally led initiatives. The change reflects a move to align giving with local leadership and to expand the impact by supporting community-led solutions. Over its history, Glimmer's work in Ethiopia has contributed to economic growth, empowerment, and resilience, and the organization continues to build on that legacy through a locally focused approach.
