The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a nonprofit, publicly supported charitable organization focused on reducing traffic deaths and injuries through research and public education. For about 70 years, it has pursued understanding crash causes and sharing strategies to prevent crashes and lessen harm when they occur. The foundation combines in-house work with contributions from leading North American experts to translate findings into practical recommendations, covering four priority areas: driver behavior and performance, emerging technologies, roadway systems and drivers, and vulnerable road users. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, the organization operates in the research services field and serves the public interest by advancing road safety. Its widely cited studies address topics such as distracted driving, traffic safety culture, teen and older driver behavior, and drowsy driving. In 2023 it partnered with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to explore ways to increase the use of technology-based countermeasures to combat distracted driving, illustrating ongoing collaboration with academic partners to improve safety.
