ACI World serves as the global arm of Airports Council International, the trade association that represents the world's airports within a federated structure that includes regional groups across Africa, the Asia-Pacific & Middle East, Europe, Latin America–Caribbean, and North America. It works to influence policy development to keep international air travel safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable, and it serves hundreds of member airports across more than 160 countries as of January 2026. Based in Montreal, the organization employs several hundred staff and coordinates with international bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization to advance safety, security, and sustainability and to promote professional excellence in airport management and operations.

Its primary constituency is airports and the communities they serve, for whom it advances shared interests and supports professional development in airport management. The federation is governed by a World Governing Board, and it engages with global regulators and other international groups to address cross-border aviation issues. A recent development includes a partnership with Retail Services within ACI Latin America-Caribbean to strengthen regional collaboration around airport experience and travel retail.
