The African Studies Association (ASA) is a U.S.-based organization founded in 1957 and headquartered in Piscataway, New Jersey. It works to advance knowledge about Africa across historical and contemporary contexts and to foster a holistic understanding of the continent’s political, economic, social, cultural, scientific, and environmental landscapes. Its membership includes scholars, students, teachers, activists, development professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in African studies.

The ASA achieves its mission by providing access to leading research, promoting interdisciplinary exchanges with African scholars and institutions, and publishing high-quality Africa-related work. It builds professional networks through the Annual Meeting and other forums, supports universities in research and outreach, and recently launched Spark 3-minute thesis presentations as part of AfricaNow.
