Headquartered in Dhaka, the bank originated as a nationalized institution in 1972 and was reorganized into a public limited company in 2007 to assume its predecessor's assets, liabilities, rights and obligations, with operations formalized under a vendor agreement in July 2007 with retrospective effect. The bank is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors and is led by a managing director and chief executive officer. Its network includes 876 branches across commercial areas in Bangladesh, along with 11 circle offices, 25 divisions at the head office, and 54 zonal offices, complemented by overseas exchange houses and hundreds of overseas correspondents. This structure serves a diverse customer base of individuals and businesses, delivering banking services and remittance flows through its extensive footprint, including 27 corporate and 40 authorized dealer branches. In 2024, Anwarul Islam was appointed as managing director and chief executive officer, reflecting a recent leadership change.
