Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater operates as a nonprofit organization that encompasses its flagship company along with Ailey II, The Ailey School, Ailey Extension, and Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs. Based in New York City, it pursues a mission to advance dance through performances, training, and community initiatives for people of all backgrounds, drawing on African American heritage and other cultures to foster unity. The organization has been designated a Cultural Ambassador to the World by a U.S. Congressional Resolution and maintains a diverse, expansive repertory. Its typical season features performances in New York, a national tour, and extensive international touring, reaching nearly 500,000 people annually. In 2025, Alicia Graf Mack was appointed Artistic Director, and later that year the organization opened a new location in New York.
