Shah Gas field Development (SGD) will be a new, large-scale green field gas project located 210 km south west of the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and its Industrial partner Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) will develop the Shah Gas Field under newly formed, Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd. (Al Hosn Gas). The SGD project is part of a critical infrastructure strategic program for UAE to meet future gas demand. The Shah Gas project is considered the biggest of its kind in the world. Although this sour gas field was discovered in the mid-1960s, its remoteness and the complexity of gas extraction made development virtually impossible. Only in recent years has technology advanced to an extent that makes processing such sour gas feasible. The very high H2S and CO2 content of the gas which is expected to have about 23.5% H2S and 10% CO2 is significantly sourer than current gas produced in Abu Dhabi and will pose unique technical challenges. Success in this project will place Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd. (Al Hosn Gas) on the leading edge of heavy Sour gas Processing.
