The Alabama Shakespeare Festival operates as the state's theater within the performing arts, based in Montgomery, Alabama. It aims to engage, entertain, and inspire audiences through live productions and a range of educational and community programs. Each year around 100,000 people attend performances, with nearly half of them students, to see a mix of classics, Shakespeare, contemporary plays, musicals, and new works. Through its productions, the company seeks to reflect the diversity of people, cultures, and ideas in its community. When the pandemic disrupted the season, ASF pivoted to online performances and workshops and produced original works by Southern playwrights, while also making masks for local organizations and healthcare facilities. In early 2024, the organization experienced a leadership transition with the departure of artistic director Rick Dildine.
