Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Activities League (DSAL) operates in the spectator sports space with youth-focused programs based in San Leandro, California. It was founded in 2004 by Alameda County Sheriff’s Sergeant (now Captain) Marty Neideffer to provide constructive after-school activities for kids in Ashland and Cherryland. In its early years, DSAL connected with youth and families to create recreation options where few existed. The organization later broadened its scope to address broader social challenges, including unemployment and underinvestment in unincorporated communities, along with social and political disconnection. Its mission has evolved into a framework centered on social equity, community-led economic empowerment, and creative place making, with the aim of changing how law enforcement serves the community. A concrete recent development noted is the launch of a series of virtual conversations in December 2019 with youth and families to discuss issues affecting the Black community and the nation.
