The Alaska Municipal League is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan statewide association that unites Alaska’s municipalities. Its membership includes 165 cities, boroughs, and unified municipalities, representing more than 97% of the state's residents. Established in 1950 as the League of Alaska Cities, the group adopted its current name in 1962 when boroughs joined. The League is headquartered in Juneau and operates as a mid-sized statewide organization focused on government relations. In recent activity, AML partnered with the University of Alaska Fairbanks to host a Rural Energy Conference, in collaboration with the Denali Commission and the Southeast Conference. The organization is pursuing initiatives to retire a coal-fired power plant in Healy and to develop a battery energy storage system and wind project, with community engagement and planning around economic and workforce development.
