Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) is a regional public education agency serving suburban school districts in Allegheny County, as well as non-public, charter, and vocational-technical schools within Pennsylvania's public education system. It provides specialized services and functions as a liaison with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The AIU operates three schools for exceptional children, 11 family centers, and roughly 130 programs for children, adults, and families. Headquartered in Homestead, in the Pittsburgh region, it is one of 29 intermediate units in the state. The AIU is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors drawn from Allegheny County's suburban districts, with an executive leadership team overseeing daily operations and guiding the agency according to its mission and strategic plan. A notable recent development is the 2024 launch of BridgeUP, a program that enables classroom aides and paraprofessionals in participating districts to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a special education certification at Point Park University.
