The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) operates as the international arm of the American Bar Association, focusing on strengthening legal institutions, supporting legal professionals, and advancing human rights. Over more than three decades, it has conducted programs in more than 100 countries, working with governments, courts, lawyers, bar associations, and civil society to address local rule-of-law needs and pursue sustainable solutions. In 2007, ABA consolidated its overseas rule-of-law programs under ROLI, which today implements legal reform initiatives in more than 70 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa as part of the ABA's Center for Global Programs.

The organization employs staff both in the United States and abroad, including expatriate volunteers who provide pro bono technical legal assistance. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, it operates within the international trade and development sector to design locally responsive programs that strengthen institutions, support legal professionals, and foster public understanding of the law and citizen rights.
