The American Council on Education (ACE) is a membership organization within higher education that seeks to advance the sector through a shared, forward-looking vision. Based in Washington, D.C., ACE collaborates with its members, more than 1,600 colleges, universities, and related associations and organizations in the United States and abroad, to design solutions for current challenges and shape public policy. As the major coordinating body for the nation's higher education landscape, its strength comes from a diverse membership. ACE is the only major higher education association that represents all types of U.S. accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities. Its member institutions educate two out of every three students enrolled in all accredited, degree-granting U.S. institutions. In April 2025, ACE and the Carnegie Foundation released updated Carnegie Classifications that describe institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.
