The American Gas Association is a U.S.-based trade association focused on natural gas distribution. It was founded in 1918 and is headquartered in Washington, DC. The organization represents more than 200 local energy companies that deliver natural gas across the United States and provides programs and services for member pipelines, marketers, gatherers, international natural gas companies, and industry associates. It advocates for natural gas utilities and their customers, noting that natural gas accounts for more than a quarter of U.S. energy needs and serves about 69 million customers—roughly 95% of the nations total natural gas customers. In February 2026, the association announced the appointment of James Steffes as Chief Operating Officer. Earlier that month, it launched its 2026 Playbook, reflecting ongoing development and planning.
