Our Story American Hat Makers was founded over 50 years ago with a simple vision, craftsmanship, passion, and a commitment to quality. In the early 1970s, our founder, Gary Watrous, began his journey with just $40, investing in leather and basic tools to create belts, wallets, and purses. He sold his handmade goods from the back of his 1963 Chevy station wagon, driven by determination and a love for the craft. A few years later, Gary made a leather hat for himself. That moment sparked a turning point. What began as a personal project quickly evolved into a lifelong passion, and hat making became the core of the business. Largely self taught and shaped by hands on experience, Gary built American Hat Makers through perseverance, continuous learning, and the support of a talented community. As demand grew, so did the team, many of whom are part of Gary’s own family, contributing to the brand’s strong foundation and collaborative spirit. Today, American Hat Makers has grown into one of the largest hat manufacturers in the world, while staying true to its roots of quality craftsmanship and authentic design. At the heart of it all is not just a passion for making hats, but a deep appreciation for the people behind the brand.
