Founded in 1911, the American Psychoanalytic Association is the oldest national psychoanalytic organization in the United States. It functions as a professional membership body for psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, academics, researchers, students, and others whose work is shaped by psychoanalytic theory and values, supporting their education and ongoing professional development. Based in New York City, APsA coordinates a nationwide network that includes 36 approved training institutes and 38 affiliate societies. As a nonprofit in the psychoanalytic field, it maintains connections with regional and international bodies, including the North American Psychoanalytic Confederation (NAPsaC), the Psychoanalytic Consortium, and the International Psychoanalytical Association. In May 2026, APsA launched a video interview series featuring contributors to the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA).
