Founded in 1980 through a Congress-approved public-private partnership, the organization coordinates a nationwide system of centers that provide guidance and resources to aspiring entrepreneurs and established small businesses. Based in Burke, Virginia, it functions as the parent brand for the SBDC network within the nonprofit sector. The network comprises nearly a thousand centers and reaches more than 1.1 million small businesses nationwide. In 2008 the network generated about $5.6 billion in new sales and saved $6.4 billion in sales, and between 2007 and 2008 it helped create 12,124 new businesses and 58,501 new full-time jobs. In 2026 it received the Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award from the SBA's Wisconsin District.
