Animal Welfare Society (AWS) is a private, nonprofit veterinary services organization founded in 1967 and situated on a 40-acre property in Kennebunk, Southern Maine. It operates as a regional leader in animal welfare, supporting the human-animal bond, with about 20,000 pets and community members benefiting annually. The organization runs a Fear-Free Adoption Center that houses dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and small mammals, and also serves as the local municipal animal control impound facility, coordinating with shelters and rescue groups to transport pets for adoption. Beyond adoptions, AWS provides Stay@Home resources such as temporary boarding, pet food and supplies, and behavioral training assistance to help keep pets with their families during hardship. Its on-site Community Veterinary Clinic offers affordable care for shelter animals and community pets, with the Companion Program providing discounts to financially eligible clients. AWS supports statewide spay/neuter efforts by organizing mobile surgery and wellness clinics, and relies on a network of foster families and volunteers to sustain its programs.
