Army Emergency Relief is a private nonprofit that serves as the Army’s dedicated financial assistance resource. Established in 1942 by Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Marshall, it provides zero-interest loans and grants to Soldiers and their families for urgent needs such as vehicle repairs, rent, utilities, and emergency travel. The organization also offers emergency funds to surviving dependents and grants for special-needs medical equipment, along with scholarships for spouses and children of active or retired Soldiers. Based in the Arlington area of Virginia, AER has supported millions of Service members since its founding, distributing more than $2 billion in aid. About 90% of donated dollars are returned directly to Soldiers, a rate among the highest for U.S. nonprofits, and the organization has earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating along with the Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency. It operates within the nonprofit sector, serving the military community’s financial well-being.
