The Austen Riggs Center, based in Stockbridge in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts, has more than a century of experience providing intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy within a voluntary, open, non-coercive community. Its residential psychiatric program centers on four-times-weekly, individual therapy delivered by psychiatrists, with continuity of care maintained by the same interdisciplinary team throughout a patient's stay. The center treats about 60 patients at a time and emphasizes deep evaluation and treatment for individuals who have not benefited from other settings. It houses the Erikson Institute for Education and Research, which advances education and research in psychodynamic thought and connects clinical learning to broader societal problems through a range of programs, internships, fellowships, lectures, and organizational consultation. In January 2025, Dr. Edward Shapiro was appointed medical director and chief executive officer, reflecting a leadership transition at this long-established residential mental health institution.
