AFTRS is Australia’s national school for screen arts and broadcasting, based in Sydney, New South Wales. It provides advanced education and training tailored to the screen arts and broadcast industry and is the only institution of its kind in Australia. The school began in 1973 with an inaugural intake that included emerging filmmakers such as Gillian Armstrong, Phillip Noyce, and Chris Noonan. It has earned international recognition as one of the world’s top film schools by The Hollywood Reporter, the only Australian institution on the list. In June 2026 AFTRS planned to host its sixth annual Digital Futures Summit, with the theme Regenerate, highlighting ongoing collaboration with the national screen industry.
