The Australian Medical Council is a nonprofit organization acting as an independent national standards body for medical education and training, based in Canberra, ACT. Its primary mission is to ensure that the standards governing the education, training, and assessment of medical professionals promote and protect the health of Australians. The council develops standards and evaluates medical programs of study in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the institutions delivering them, and it assesses doctors trained overseas who seek to practice in Australia. Its work serves medical schools, training institutions, and internationally trained practitioners, contributing to the health system by upholding rigorous educational and professional benchmarks. In 2022 it released updates to the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training and to the Standards for Assessment and Accreditation of Primary Medical Programs, and in 2023 a new Chair was appointed to oversee the Medical School Accreditation Committee.
