The Automation Federation is a professional association within the automation machinery manufacturing sector that serves as a collective voice for automation professionals and organizations. It helps its members fulfill their missions, advance the science and engineering of automation technologies, and develop the workforce needed to benefit from automation. The federation was established in 2006 by the International Society of Automation, which acts as its parent organization. Based in Durham, North Carolina, the federation operates as an umbrella and outreach body for ISA, coordinating activities across industry groups and standards efforts. Its member base comprises companies and professionals in automation, and the organization collaborates with federal and state entities to address industrial cyber risk and promote ISA/IEC 62443 security standards. In 2018, it entered into a partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to raise awareness of cyber threats in industrial control systems.
