Ballet BC is a Vancouver-based contemporary ballet company that emphasizes collaborative creation, production, and education within Canada’s dance landscape. Founded in 1986 by David Y. H. Lui, Jean Orr and Sheila Begg, with Annette av Paul as its first Artistic Director, the company has since been led by a succession of artistic directors and, as of July 2020, operates under Medhi Walerski. The organization is internationally recognized for its bold and innovative approach and has contributed to the national development of dance, including a 2019 Olivier Award nomination for its Sadler’s Wells tour in London. Ballet BC serves audiences and professional dancers through performances and education initiatives, including MOVE, a movement-based program launched on Granville Island in 2023, and expanded adult-class offerings introduced that year. In 2026 the company announced the appointment of resident choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, reflecting ongoing expansion of its creative leadership.
