The Banco Central de Costa Rica serves as the country's central bank and monetary authority, responsible for maintaining the value of the national currency and its convertibility with other currencies. It defines and manages monetary and exchange-rate policy and operates as the state's advisor and bank-cashier, in addition to issuing and administering banknotes and coins. It works with the National Council for Financial System Supervision to support the stability and proper functioning of the national financial system. Headquartered in Merced, San José, Costa Rica, the Banco Central de Costa Rica also holds responsibility for custodianship and management of the nation's international monetary reserves. Its mandate includes shaping monetary and exchange-rate policy and contributing to a stable and well-functioning financial system, serving a diverse client base that includes the State, financial institutions, and the broader economy. A notable development in early 2026 was the launch of Monedero SINPE-TP, a digital wallet introduced to expand payment capabilities.
