The firm is a small Fort Lauderdale-based law practice focused on representing injured workers in the United States and internationally. It was founded in 1995 by David C. Barnett and Barry R. Lerner, after they previously represented both employers and carriers as well as injured employees, choosing to represent employees exclusively. Since its founding, the firm has concentrated on protecting the rights of injured workers, including expatriate compensation claims, across a range of statutes such as the Florida Workers’ Compensation Act, the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, the Defense Base Act, the Non-Appropriated Funds Instrumentalities Act, and the Jones Act. 
 It serves injured workers nationwide and abroad and has built a network of associations to support its international practice. It is described as the largest firm in the world representing expatriate compensation cases arising under the Defense Base Act.
