Battery Park Eco Farms was created by the Sustainable Technology Institute (STI) for the purposes of urban farming research, city revitalization, and creating the availability of more healthy local food for the residents living in the food desert in which the farm is located. The Farm began operating in the fall of 2013, when STI acquired a new training center location ideally located next to Battery Park, where large amounts of south-facing grounds were available for building greenhouses and growing food, providing solar training, and developing Virginia’s first urban aquaponic training and research center. Research being conducted relates to the use of diverse renewable energy technologies to offset operation costs, while also lowering fossil fuel use and the Farm’s carbon footprint. The particular goal of the research team is to investigate the synergies between anaerobic digestion technology and urban hydroponic gardening. Our goal is to create a tested, proven, replicable model of an urban hydroponic gardening system that grows food, while simultaneously diverting local food waste from landfills.
