The firm traces its roots to Mason-McDuffie Real Estate, founded in 1887 by Joseph Mason to serve Bay Area residents. When Duncan McDuffie joined in 1905, the company helped pioneer the concept of planned unit development, creating the Claremont, Northbrae, and St. Francis Wood residential parks. It collaborated with noted architects and pursued innovative design elements such as green belts, contoured roads, and underground utilities, earning national attention. 

In 1997 Mason-McDuffie joined the Prudential Real Estate Network, and in 2010 it realigned with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, continuing under the Mason-McDuffie identity. In 2017 the company was sold in parts to regional brokerages that continued to operate as franchise affiliates under the Better Homes and Gardens network. Today the firm operates as a regional real estate brokerage based in Walnut Creek, California, and it is part of the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate system serving the Bay Area.
