The Better Than Cash Alliance is a non-profit network based at the United Nations that brings together governments, companies, and international organizations to accelerate the transition from cash to responsible digital payments in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. It counts more than 80 member organizations that are committed to digitizing payments to boost efficiency, transparency, women's economic participation, and financial inclusion, with the aim of building digital and inclusive economies. The alliance does not seek to abolish physical cash but to provide digital options that are better than cash. Its Secretariat offers advisory services, shares action-oriented research, fosters peer learning, and conducts advocacy at national, regional, and global levels. Based in New York, the alliance operates as a relatively small to mid-sized nonprofit. In 2026, it announced a formal collaboration with Karandaaz Pakistan to accelerate digital merchant payments in Pakistan, a partnership hosted by the United Nations Development Programme.
