Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit based in Staten Island, New York, focused on restoring oyster reefs in New York Harbor through public education initiatives. By reestablishing oyster habitats they aim to provide ecological benefits such as habitat for marine life, natural water filtration, and shoreline protection from storms. Since its founding in 2014, the project has reintroduced 122 million oysters and mobilized thousands of participants, including students, volunteers, and restaurant partners, with education programs reaching 70+ schools citywide. The flagship is the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School on Governors Island, a maritime high school whose students participate in hands-on restoration as part of their career and technical education. They grow oysters, design and build reef structures, dive to monitor reefs, operate boats, and conduct marine biology research, contributing to both restoration work and education.
