BKT, Banka Kombetare Tregtare, is the largest and oldest commercial bank in Albania. Its origins go back to 1925 with the opening of a Durrës branch in the building that today houses the BKT Durrës Branch, cited as the oldest Albanian financial institution. The bank adopted its current name in 1993 after merging the Albanian Commercial Bank and the National Bank of Albania and is headquartered in Tirana with a sizeable workforce. Since privatization, it has earned multiple national and international recognitions, including The Banker Magazine's Best Bank of the Year in Albania, EMEA Finance and Euromoney's Best Bank in Albania, and regional honors such as Best Medium-Sized Bank in Southeastern Europe and Best Bank in Southeast Europe for 2009; it also holds AAA (Alb) for investment and corporate governance from JCR Eurasia Rating. In March 2026, the University of New York Tirana renewed its seven-year cooperation with BKT, expanding scholarships and internship opportunities for students in the Applied Banking and Finance Bachelor Program. This collaboration underscores BKT's engagement with education and talent development in Albania.
