Breadcoin is a nonprofit organization that administers a community food token aimed at alleviating hunger and making giving a more dignified act. The Breadcoin token can be given to people in need and redeemed at participating food vendors, creating a local payment system for feeding community members. It coordinates a network that includes individuals, businesses, churches and other religious groups, service organizations, and nonprofits to ensure the hungry are fed. The program operates through monthly donors who contribute in Washington, DC; Baltimore; Pennsylvania's Capital Region; and Tampa, Florida, with plans to extend to other cities. Based in Washington, DC, Breadcoin is a small- to mid-sized nonprofit that works within the nonprofit sector to connect donors, vendors, and recipients. A recent development in May 2023 was a partnership with Farmers Restaurant Group to distribute Breadcoin tokens to people experiencing food insecurity that can be used at local businesses.
