It was formed on 1 April 1974 through the amalgamation of Beeston and Stapleford Urban District, part of Basford Rural District, and Eastwood Urban District, and it received Borough status in 1977. The borough is divided into 21 wards and is represented by 44 councillors, with two-tier local services delivered by the Borough Council alongside Nottinghamshire County Council, and its four main towns are Beeston, Stapleford, Kimberley and Eastwood.
