The Bureau of Indian Education is a U.S. government agency in the government administration sector, headquartered in Washington, DC. It administers educational programs and residential facilities for American Indian students from federally recognized tribes, operating a network of 183 elementary and secondary schools with dormitories. These facilities serve more than 48,000 K-12 students and residential boarders across 64 reservations in 23 states, and the agency directly oversees two post-secondary institutions: Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The bureau employs several hundred staff to manage this nationwide system.

Its mission centers on providing education and related support services to students and tribal communities across a broad geographic footprint. It has expanded behavioral health and wellness resources for its schools, including a 24/7 support line for students and staff, reflecting a focus on student well-being. A notable recent development is a 2024 collaboration with Haskell Indian Nations University and the Native American Agriculture Fund to establish an agriculture business degree program, illustrating efforts to broaden program offerings in line with tribal priorities.
