The California Genealogical Society and Library is a library and research organization focused on helping individuals explore diverse California family histories. Based in Oakland, California, the society has a long-standing history dating to its founding in 1898 and maintains a physical library while also gathering and preserving vital records, disseminating information through publications and online resources, and offering instruction in genealogical research through meetings, seminars, and workshops. Its activities are aimed at supporting both people with California-specific ancestral connections and those seeking any connection to the state’s heritage, providing access to resources regardless of prior family ties. The organization positions itself within the libraries sector by combining archival collection, education, and public outreach to facilitate genealogical research for a broad audience. Recent developments include expanding its collection with additional genealogical titles and pursuing organizational planning to better serve members and secure its future.
