California Humanities is a mid-sized nonprofit based in Oakland, California, operating in the philanthropic fundraising services field. Since 1975, it has awarded grants and run programs across the state aimed at surfacing underrepresented voices and illuminating California’s diverse stories.

As a partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the organization prioritizes ideas, conversation, and learning as ways to deepen understanding of the human condition and strengthen civic participation. In February 2026, California Humanities launched Reclaiming Its Stories, a six-part Indigenous-led podcast series centering California Native voices to explore history, culture, and contemporary life. Through its grants and programs, California Humanities supports public projects and community initiatives that foster dialogue and cross-cultural understanding across California.
