The California School of Herbal Studies is an educational institution focused on herbal education within the alternative medicine sector, based in Forestville, Sonoma County, California. Founded in 1978 by Rosemary Gladstar, it is among the oldest herbal education centers in North America and is currently led by school director Rebecca Maxfield with a skilled staff of teachers. The school’s mission is to support sustainable communities by delivering earth-centered, community-based herbal education that equips individuals to act as community herbalists. Its curriculum centers on Western herbalism, drawing a materia medica mainly from North American and European herbs, and it complements this with perspectives from Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. The program includes a full-time Roots of Herbalism intensive, along with weekend series courses and one-day workshops. Graduates of the intensive program may advance to a second-year Community Herbalist track and receive completion certificates recognized within the herbal community.
