Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is a mid-sized museum and cultural complex located in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Over decades it expanded from a small, two-room space into a 33,000-square-foot center that includes four galleries—one dedicated to works from the Mitchell collection—along with an interactive family learning center and a performance hall. The campus also houses the Shrode Art Center with gallery space, classrooms, and studios, the historic Mitchell Home and Schweinfurth House used for events, and the Goldman-Kuenz Sculpture Park, which features a notable outdoor contemporary sculpture collection. The Mitchell family legacy remains a central facet of the center's identity for visitors to southern Illinois. In mid-2026, Cedarhurst announced a leadership transition with Paula Lincoln named Visual Arts Director to succeed Rusty Freeman, who is retiring after 17 years. Freeman is scheduled to depart in late June 2026, with Lincoln expected to assume duties around July 1, 2026.
