The Center for Plain Language, based in Richmond, Virginia, is a small organization focused on clarifying government and business documents. It supports practitioners who use plain language, trains those who should use it, and promotes demand for plain language across the documents people read and use. Its activities include advocating for plain language in government, law, and business, as well as coordinating events that foster learning and networking and recognizing strong writing through awards and report cards. It also conducts and shares research on how plain language improves communication. A recent development was the introduction of the Sokohl Award at the 2025 ClearMark Awards.
