The Center for Victim and Human Rights (CVHR) is the only nonprofit legal services organization in Indiana specifically designed to help victims of crime and human rights abuses. We advance our mission “to empower and advance the safety of victims through legal representation and educational outreach” by providing comprehensive legal representation for victims of crime and human rights violations who often lack safety and resources.

Since opening our doors in 2008, the CVHR has worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other human rights issues, as well as survivors and families of homicide victims. We have assisted clients from around the world, from Latinos coming from throughout Latin America, to Asians and Africans, as well as domestic residents in the United States. We have helped male and female, young and old, and many families with children. The CVHR has provided legal representation, ranging from counsel and advice to full attorney representation at hearings, to hundreds of these clients.

We provide these services through three specific projects:

(1) the Crime Victim Rights Enforcement Project, which is designed to enforce rights delineated under Indiana’s crime victim rights statute and the federal Crime Victim Rights Act;

(2) the Protection Order Project, which is designed to establish an attorney-client relationship between victims and attorneys in the procurement and enforcement of protection orders; and

(3) the Humanitarian Immigration Project, which provides representation for victims in the U and T visa processes, as well as representing victims in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petition, asylum, and special immigrant juvenile petitions.

But perhaps our most important contribution is that we stand next to and in front of victims in court, to allow their voices to be heard and to hold the perpetrators accountable.
