CIRAD is a French agricultural research center focused on international development, based in Montpellier in the Occitanie region. It positions sustainable development as the foundation of its worldwide operations, aiming to account for the long-term ecological, economic, and social consequences of change in developing communities. Its research spans the life sciences, human sciences, and engineering sciences and applies these disciplines to agriculture and food, natural resource management, and the societal context, typically through partnerships. CIRAD supports development through research and trials, training, dissemination of information, innovation, and appraisals. Its work engages international development partners and stakeholders in developing countries and agricultural sectors, addressing practical challenges in farming and resource management. In 2022, CIRAD launched the PRETAG initiative—Pesticide Reduction for Tropical Agricultures—reflecting its focus on reducing pesticide use in tropical agriculture.
