The City of Montebello is a municipal government serving the Southern California community surrounding Los Angeles, located eight miles southeast of downtown. Established in 1920 with historical ties to Franciscan missions, it administers a wide array of public services, such as parks and recreation, police and fire protection, and a substantial public transit network operated as Montebello Bus Lines. The city spans about four square miles and is home to a multicultural population of around 65,000 residents. As a mid-size local government entity, its remit includes public safety, mobility, and community services for residents and local businesses. In early 2021, a federal lawsuit was filed by the California Grocers Association challenging a city ordinance that provided a $4 hero pay wage boost for some workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
