Founded by concerned parents and admissions professionals, Colleges of Distinction is committed to connecting students with colleges, universities, and information that prepare students for successful careers, active citizenship, and lifelong learning. Colleges of Distinction is a college guide with a unique approach. Instead of looking for the richest or the most famous schools, we honor and recognize hundreds of small, teaching-centered colleges across the country that meet our four overarching distinctions—Engagement, Teaching, Community, and Outcomes—each of which are the fundamental elements of an effective undergraduate education. With our hand-picked colleges, we offer institutions that ensure that each student is seen as an important member of the community, both academically and in the day-to-day life on campus. First, schools must have Engaged Students who write, talk, think, debate, explore—anything but simply take endless notes in lecture halls. Secondly, a college must exemplify Great Teaching that develops new opportunities, learning styles, and cutting-edge methodology. A Vibrant Community, equally crucial, provides the chance for students to grow outside of the classroom, whether that be through residential living, campus activities, or community-wide events.
